Vilnius University Library Receives a Donated Sammelband

On Tuesday, the library received an exceptional gift – a sammelband containing two books published in Basel in 1486: Johann Herold’s “Postilla super epistolas et evangelia” (“Commentary on the Epistles and Gospels”) and Peter Lombard’s “Sententiarum libri IV” (“Four Books of Sentences”).

The books were donated by Daumantas Levas Todesas, Chair of the Council of Lithuanian National Communities, who visited the library with his family. When presenting the gift, he emphasized the importance of the written tradition in Jewish culture and the need to nurture and safeguard it.

The donated books have survived thanks not only to his efforts but also to those of his entire family, who collectively cared for and protected them and ensured that they would ultimately be entrusted to Vilnius University.

Welcoming the guests and accepting the donation, Vilnius University Rector Prof. Rimvydas Petrauskas and VU Library Director General Irena Krivienė expressed their appreciation for this valuable gift, which will enrich the library’s existing collection of incunabula, and conveyed their gratitude to the patron.
