On Tuesday, the Vilnius LITUA Rotary Club presented Vilnius University with an exceptional gift - a facsimile of a two page (bifolium) transcript of the Quedlinburg Annals (an exact copy of the original document).
The Quedlinburg Annals are a chronicle written at the Imperial women’s abbey in Quedlinburg. They are important to Lithuania because they contain the first known mention of the name of Lithuania:
“Saint Bruno, also called Boniface, an archbishop and monk, in the eleventh year of his conversion, on the border of Rus’ and Lithuania, struck on the head by pagans seven days before the Ides of March [i.e., March 9], together with eighteen of his own, departed to heaven.”
In addition to members of the Vilnius LITUA Rotary Club, the event was attended by VU Rector Rimvydas Petrauskas and VU Library Director General Irena Krivienė.
The facsimile was prepared by the publishing house "Petro ofsetas".
