Lithuania Minor is a unique and inseparable part of the mosaic of Lithuania’s history. And an excellent way to explore this history more deeply is through research into libraries and books.
Having undertaken these studies, Prof. Domas Kaunas on Thursday presented the monograph „The Book Houses of Lithuania Minor“ in the Franciszek Smuglewicz Hall.
Although Prussia’s libraries developed according to German traditions, they also collected publications in the Lithuanian language, which later became a foundation for Lithuanian studies. Moreover, in the 19th century the libraries of Lithuanian societies began to be established – from the late 19th century until 1939, 47 of them were in operation.
The development of the libraries of Lithuania Minor also tells the story of the region’s culture, its inhabitants, and its fate in the tempests of history – all of which has been set down in a book of nearly a thousand pages,
Participating in the event were the author; Prof. Dr. Aušra Navickienė and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tomas Petreikis of Vilnius University’s Faculty of Communication; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marija Prokopčik, Director of the Information Services Department of the Vilnius University Library.
